Investing in Research
Image of globe and energy resources

The Alberta government's commitment to energy research is more important today than ever before.

Alberta's conventional oil and gas supplies are declining rapidly, and relying solely on current methods of production is not an option.

Research is needed to develop ways to recover the significant amount of conventional oil that is left behind, as well as less energy intensive methods to extract heavy oil and bitumen. Research is also necessary to enable the energy sector to reduce the impact of greenhouse gases and other emissions.

The Alberta Energy Research Institute is laying the foundation for an integrated and comprehensive research and development strategy over the next 20 years. The 2009-14 AERI Strategic Business Plan is intended to help transform separate sectors of the economy into an integrated energy industry focused on using Alberta's resources to their fullest potential. The emphasis will be on advancing technology, while managing the carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen cycle to achieve high-value energy products and world-class environmental standards.

AERI developed this strategy with input from various stakeholders and other government departments, including Alberta Finance and Enterprise, Alberta Energy, Alberta Environment, and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development.
