OSLO Cold Water Extraction (OCWE)

OCWE technology separates bitumen from oil sands in surface-mining operations. The process is less harmful to the environment as it does not use caustic to improve the bitumen extraction and operates at ambient temperatures.

The main advantage of this technology is that is offers equivalent extraction as the current hot water process, improved quality of the tailings and large energy savings. Those savings equate to a 60 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions.

This technology has made the planned expansion of Syncrude's operations to remote ore bodies practical. The OCWE technology is part of Syncrude's Low Energy Extraction Process.
